The New Zealand Seniors Quality of Life Report 2025 found nearly seven in ten of us want to receive care in our own home rather than in a facility. We want familiar surroundings; we want to still feel independent and we want to keep control over our own daily routine. The wanting isn't the hard part, it’s usually the how that is challenging. For a lot of organisers, that's exactly where the right care worker comes in, not as a replacement for home, but as the thing that makes staying there possible. # **Why home matters so much** There's a reason ageing in place is the preference for most people, not the exception. Home means your own bed, your own garden, the neighbour who waves every morning, the routine you've built over decades. For someone living with memory loss in particular, familiar surroundings can be genuinely settling in a way a new environment rarely is. Staying home isn't just about comfort, it's about someone continuing to feel like themselves. # **What actually gets in the way** The same report found the two biggest worries about ageing in place are keeping up with home maintenance and general safety. That tracks with what we hear from organisers too. It's rarely one big thing that starts the search for support. It's a handful of smaller things: showering safely, remembering meals, getting to appointments, having company through a long afternoon.
